Hair Care
How to put on your wig:
Before you start, make sure your hair is braided down and your braids are suitable for the style you will be wearing!
- Take the wig out of the box and remove any protective packaging
- Turn the wig upside down; using your first finger and thumb expand the sides and place your head into it (keeping the wig upside down)
- Adjust the wig so that is it sitting in the correct position. If there is a parting make sure that it is in line with the parting in your braids.
- If you would like to tighten the wig, look for the two straps on the sides and use them to adjust the sizing.
- Style the wig as you desire.
- Welcome to the Chrissy Bales family … now slay
Do:
- Store your wig on a mannequin head when you remove it so it can retain the style and shape
- Wash and condition your wig regularly – minimum every two weeks!
- Deep condition your hair regularly – at least once every three weeks
My personal favourite is the L’Oreal Fibrology Shampoo and Masque - Use a heat protectant when using heated styling tools to minimise split ends and heat damage
- Brush your hair only when needed – excessive combing and brushing decreases the longevity of your virgin hair and the wig.
- Brush/comb your wig from the tips to the roots – this reduces shedding.
- Use a paddle brush or wide tooth comb to detangle
- Store your wig in a safe place (i.e. on a mannequin head or in the box) and out of the reach of children
- Braid your natural hair under the wig so that it can lay flat
- Use a paddle brush or wide tooth comb to detangle
Do not:
- Apply too much product to your wig – this will weigh down the hair, leaving it greasy and not very cute!
- Direct excessive high heat (i.e. when using a blow dryer, straightener or curling wand) to the mesh cap or lace frontal/3 way lace closure/silk based closure.
- Leave your wig to deep condition on a hot radiator – this is extremely dangerous!
- Sleep or shower with the wig on (where possible).
How to wash and deep condition straight/wavy hair:
- Placing the wig on your head, use a paddle brush to detangle the hair.
- Remove the wig from your head and wet the hair thoroughly with lukewarm water.
- Shampoo the hair from the root to tip, using your fingers to distribute the product. (Throughout the process place your hand inside the wig and hold it upright in order to preserve the shape.)
- Rinse well.
- Repeat steps 4 & 5 two to three more times depending on how much product build up is on the hair.
- Towel dry the hair to remove the excess water.
- Use a deep conditioner/masque of your choice apply it generously, starting from the tips and working your way up to the roots (avoid the weft) using your fingers to distribute the product.
- Wrap the wig the tightly in cling film and then wrap the bundle in foil.
- Leave it in a warm place for at least 6 hours.
- Remove the foil and cling film and rinse thoroughly. Ensure all the product has been rinsed out!
- Leave to air dry on a mannequin head until both the hair and the mesh cap are completely dry. (Make sure you redefine any partings that the wig may have.)
- Style as desired
How to wash and deep condition deep wave/curly hair:
- Place the wig on your head and split the hair into a minimum of 4 sections, working through steps 2 & 3 one section at a time.
- Using a spray bottle dampen the hair and apply a conditioner of your choice.
- Run your finger through the hair to remove any major tangles and then using a wide tooth comb detangle the hair.
- Remove the sections from the wig, take the wig off of your head and wet it thoroughly with lukewarm water.
Do not rub the hair, use a wiping motion.
- Add a generous amount of leave in conditioner & serum to the hair, focusing on the ends.
- Whilst the hair is still damp, use a denman brush or paddle brush to redefine the curls.
- Leave to air dry on a mannequin head until both the hair and the mesh cap are completely dry. (Make sure you redefine any partings that the wig may have.)
- Style as desired.

Top tips for flawless wigs/weaves!
- Try and make your weaves into wigs! This will avoid cutting of the wefts, tangling whilst you sleep and oil/grease from your scalp seeping onto the weft. You can take it off at night and maintain style for longer. Email me at info@chrissybales.com so I can hook you up!
- Invest in your products! Don’t just buy the cheapest products; buy what works! Always be willing to try out new things (when you can) in order to find your favourite products and discover the best products for your weaves/wigs.
- Always try to air dry your weaves/wigs. As with natural hair too much heat will dry out the hair and make it harder to maintain. Air drying = softer sleeker hair!
- Avoid overdosing on products. Only use the necessary amount; too much product results in greasy, heavy weaves. This makes maintenance harder and will ruin your flawless look.
- Be sure to get the correct braiding pattern for your wigs. Messy braids will not do your wigs/weaves any justice and will ruin your flawless look.
